Since 2012, in collaboration with Bangor University, Reef-World has been collecting data on diving behaviour in the Philippines and the adoption of Green Fins environmental practices as part of a study into the impacts of scuba diving on the health of our coral reefs.
After 2015, Puerto Galera members actually saw an increase in the potential threat from their dive centres so recently, international coordinators from Reef-World returned to reinvigorate momentum.
Designed for the marine tourism industry, as well as local and national marine resource managers, we have a new two-minute video on sustainable diving titled “Green Fins for a Blue Planet”, produced by UNEP in partnership with syndicated cartoonist Jim Toomey.
Through a collaboration between Sabah Parks and NGO Reef Check Malaysia, Reef-World conducted a 5-day Assessor Training workshop to train up a new team of Sabah-based assessors and coordinators to roll out Green Fins to diving industries in Semporna and Kota Kinabalu (KK).
The Reef-World Foundation funded the Advanced Open Water training of four Vietnamese assessors on the 10th-12thJanuary 2016.
The 5th International Tropical Marine Ecosystem Management Symposium (ITMEMS5) was held in Panglao, Bohol, the Philippines from the 25th – 28th February 2016 and was designed to build the conservation capacity of over 50 marine resource managers from 27 countries.
2015 saw another year where 100% of the active dive centres in Malapascua signed up to be members.
Two staff from Reef-World visited The El Nido Foundation, on location, to conduct a Green Fins Assessor Refresher Training course between the 23rdNovember and the 1st December 2015.
Over the last few months, Green Fins Malaysia recruited 2 new members in Tioman Island, 6 in Perhentian Island, 3 in Redang Island and 1 in Mataking Island, and reassessed 3 existing members on Tioman Island.
