To get some more insight into what it’s like to be a Green Fins member, we chatted to Virginie Casse from Bali Scuba in Sanur which joined the programme in 2019.
While still a lesser known dive destination – there are only a handful of dive shops in the area – awareness of Ambon among divers is steadily growing. For this reason, Green Fins implementation is key while this relatively “young” dive destination is still developing. By reaching the Ambon dive industry before it gets too big, the Green Fins Indonesia team can set the bar for environmental standards and make sustainable diving practices the norm in the area.
In May 2019, The Reef-World Foundation completed its first ever Assessor Exchange programme. Newly certified Green Fins Assessor Trainer Alvin Chelliah, from Reef Check Malaysia, spent a week visiting Marthen Welly and Wira Sanjaya – the Green Fins Indonesia assessor team – from the Coral Triangle Center, in Bali, Indonesia. The Reef-World Foundation – the international coordinators of Green Fins – has completed the successful pilot of its Green Fins “Train the Trainer” programme; the first of its kind in the world.
The Government of the Republic of Indonesia hosted the fifth Our Ocean Conference in Bali on 29th and 30th of October 2018. Klementina, from Reef-World, participated at the conference and was positively surprised by the momentum building up around coral reefs.
The Coral Triangle Center (CTC) hosted the BlueGreen360 award winners in Bali on June 25-27, for a three-day study tour on sustainable tourism.
Bali has long been a tourist hotspot and despite recent hiccups with press misconceptions about the impact from Mount Agung’s activity, diving plays a major role in the island’s tourism. In order to leverage this passionate industry for coral reef protection whilst helping them to reduce their own threats, the esteemed Coral Triangle Center have adopted the Green Fins approach.
The Coral Triangle Initiative is a multilateral environmental agreement between the six member states that encompass the coral triangle area. Between 27-30 November 2017, Senior Officials met in Manila, Philippines.
In a ground-breaking step forward for the diving industry, the Asia Dive Expo (ADEX) launched the BlueGreen360 awards in collaboration with the Coral Triangle Centre, Blue Ocean Network and The Reef-World Foundation.
