The Reef-World Foundation – the international coordinator of the UN Environment Programme’s Green Fins initiative – is calling for the dive industry to keep sustainability high on its agenda during the COVID-19 crisis.
In May 2019, The Reef-World Foundation completed its first ever Assessor Exchange programme. Newly certified Green Fins Assessor Trainer Alvin Chelliah, from Reef Check Malaysia, spent a week visiting Marthen Welly and Wira Sanjaya – the Green Fins Indonesia assessor team – from the Coral Triangle Center, in Bali, Indonesia. To find out how it went, the Reef-World team spoke to assessors Alvin and Marthen – here’s what they shared.
The Reef-World Foundation – the international coordinators of Green Fins – is delighted to announce Tioman Dive Centre (TDC) as the winner of this year’s Green Fins Award. The award, which recognises Tioman Dive Centre as the Green Fins member with the lowest environmental impact, was presented as part of the BlueGreen360 Awards at ADEX Singapore (11-14 April 2019).
In a ground-breaking step forward for the diving industry, the Asia Dive Expo (ADEX) launched the BlueGreen360 awards in collaboration with the Coral Triangle Centre, Blue Ocean Network and The Reef-World Foundation.
As of the 12th November 2016, Green Fins are now official partners with the Miss SCUBA International (MSI) pageant, the only pageant programme that globally focusses on the importance of the oceans and their current struggle.
In September 2016 Reef-World conducted another Assessor Training Programme on Pulau Perhentian for five Department of Marine Parks staff and one additional Reef Check representative.
Through a collaboration between Sabah Parks and NGO Reef Check Malaysia, Reef-World conducted a 5-day Assessor Training workshop to train up a new team of Sabah-based assessors and coordinators to roll out Green Fins to diving industries in Semporna and Kota Kinabalu (KK).
Over the last few months, Green Fins Malaysia recruited 2 new members in Tioman Island, 6 in Perhentian Island, 3 in Redang Island and 1 in Mataking Island, and reassessed 3 existing members on Tioman Island.
Following investigatory work for Green Fins in Pulau Tioman in 2009 we are delighted to say the Green Fins approach is now up and running on the Island through a partnership between Department of Marine Parks Malaysia (DMPM), Reef Check Malaysia and, of course, supported by the dive centres.
