The concept of sustainability was discussed in detail by members and partners of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) when they met for the Annual Summit (PAS 2019) hosted by the Department of Tourism Philippines in Cebu City (9-12 May 2019).
Between the 16th-21st April 2018, a new team of assessors from the Negros Oriental Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), satellite Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (CENROs Ayungon and Dumaguete) and local NGO Marine Conservation Philippines were trained up by Reef-World.
Once again, among the excitement and fun filled schedule of the Asian Dive Expo (ADEX) in Singapore last weekend, a group of 50 industry leaders gathered for a deeper purpose: the Sustainable Think Tank and Dialogue.
Six Senses Laamu has scaled-up its marine conservation efforts with a partnership with The Reef-World Foundation, UN Environment’s Global Technical Partner for the Green Fins initiative.
The Reef-World Foundation was present at the annual Boot Show in Dusseldorf for a few days to meet with various partners, meet some Green Fins members and to see the usual SCUBA diving and snorkelling innovations and trends.
Bali has long been a tourist hotspot and despite recent hiccups with press misconceptions about the impact from Mount Agung’s activity, diving plays a major role in the island’s tourism. In order to leverage this passionate industry for coral reef protection whilst helping them to reduce their own threats, the esteemed Coral Triangle Center have adopted the Green Fins approach.
The 32nd ICRI General Meeting took place from the 7th to the 9th December 2017 at the UN Office in Nairobi, Kenya where The Reef-World Foundation as Members of ICRI were invited to present as part of ICRI Goal 4 – ‘Promote the deployment of mooring devices limiting the mechanical destruction of coral reefs and seagrasses.’
DEMA (Diving Equipment and Marketing Association) took place in the Orange County Convention Centre in Orlando Florida, from the 1st to the 4th of November. Reef-World’s representative, Klementina Dukoska, took the opportunity to discuss with dive, and related businesses, to create joint ocean solutions, through utilizing what is the only recognized standard for sustainable diving and snorkelling, Green Fins.
Over the course of 2017, Reef-World has been working hard with DENR to form a national structure for Green Fins Philippines assessors under the new Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Management Program (CMEMP), or as it is known locally ‘Agos ng buhay’. This work has been supported by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
