The Reef-World Foundation were very kindly invited to participate in the ‘Regional Forum on Solutions for Oceans, Coasts and Human Well-Being in Asia and the Pacific’ held in Cebu City, Philippines in May.
As Green Fins hits 10 years since it’s inception by UNEP, all the project partners across seven countries met in Bangkok to share past successes and discuss next steps for Green Fins in each country.
The Reef-World Foundation, with the support of the United Nations Environment Programme, ran a booth at ADEX aimed at promoting the project and reaching out to divers to adopt best practices.
Following investigatory work for Green Fins in Pulau Tioman in 2009 we are delighted to say the Green Fins approach is now up and running on the Island through a partnership between Department of Marine Parks Malaysia (DMPM), Reef Check Malaysia and, of course, supported by the dive centres.
Through a collaboration involving UNEP, IUCN’s Mangroves for the Future (MFF) initiative and UK charity Reef-World, the Green Fins approach is being implemented in partnership with the Maldives’s Environmental Protection Agency.
Between December 2013 and January 2014, Green Fins volunteer coordinators were conducting the training and assessments for Green Fins member dive centres in Moalboal.
Following a local ordinance, all dive guides must attend the seminar in order to be licensed to guide in the Municipal waters of Moalboal. We are happy to announce that The Reef-World Foundation will be representing Green Fins at this year’s Asia Dive Expo in Singapore, 11-13 April 2014.
On the 29th October, Reef-World held a training event for the Coastal and Marine Management Office or CMMO who are the authority responsible for Green Fins on a national level.
