As the first women-owned and operated dive centre on Barbados’s south coast and the island’s first and only PADI Eco Center, Green Divers Barbados is redefining what it means to run a boutique dive operation. Opened in February 2026, this forward-thinking dive centre was built on a foundation of sustainability, safety, and marine stewardship. We spoke with Manager Kiera Bloom about their journey as Green Fins Digital Members, their proactive approach to diver education, and their ambitious plans to empower local youth through ocean access.

Founders of Green Divers Barbados
Building Sustainability into the Blueprint
Starting from scratch and so recently, Green Divers Barbados didn’t have to overhaul existing habits. They had the unique opportunity to design an eco-friendly operation from the ground up.
“Though we are a new operation, our team is made up of experienced PADI professionals who have a deep-rooted passion for conservation,” explains Manager Kiera Bloom. “We set up our operation with goals of being paperless and as eco-friendly as possible.”
Was Green Fins membership a natural choice for this journey? Kiera admits that “we joined Green Fins because it was a necessary step to becoming a PADI Eco Center which has been our goal from Day 1.” Though they may have joined Green Fins for the PADI Eco Center credential, Green Divers stayed for the community and invaluable tools for their sustainability goals. Keira goes on to tell us “we are thrilled to be Green Fins members as it has opened an amazing channel to conversations in sustainability and has proved to be a wonderful resource for inspiration and advice.”
Tangible Action: From Pre-Dive Briefings to Free Buoyancy Refreshers
At Green Divers Barbados, environmental practices are integrated into every stage of the customer experience. Operations are fully paperless, with all documentation handled digitally in advance. Single-use plastic bottles have been eliminated in favour of an on-site water refill station and reusable bottles, while rashguards, hats, and reef-safe sunscreens are offered to protect both divers and delicate coral reefs.
Underwater, conservation efforts are equally thorough:
- Mandatory Eco-Briefings: Every dive starts with targeted education on good buoyancy, avoiding contact with marine life, and respecting coral habitats.
- Complimentary Buoyancy Refreshers: To protect fragile reefs from accidental damage, the centre offers free buoyancy practice sessions in confined water before divers head out over coral beds.
- Guides on every dive: Tours are always guided by Divemasters trained to communicate environmental best practices underwater.
- Community Clean-ups: The center proudly hosts monthly Dive Against Debris events. Kept at a minimal cost to ensure accessibility, these gatherings bring local and visiting divers together to remove marine litter while building a community of ocean defenders.

Overcoming Island Logistics and Changing Mindsets
Operating on a small island brings unique sustainability hurdles. Sourcing eco-friendly products locally can be challenging, and sustainable alternatives often carry higher price tags or limited availability.
Beyond supply chains, fostering a culture of responsible diving requires patient guest education. Kiera shares “We’ve also discovered that changing habits starts with education. Whether it’s encouraging divers to leave their gloves and poking sticks behind, participate in a buoyancy refresher, or think differently about their impact underwater, we’ve found that people are much more willing to embrace sustainable practices when they understand the positive difference those actions make.”
Green Divers Barbados are not alone in either of these challenges, they are shared by dive operators all over the world, and Green Fins has been collecting solutions for them for over 20 years.
“Green Fins has provided us with the resources and confidence to have those conversations, and they’ve become one of the most rewarding, though sometimes challenging, parts of our operation” says Kiera.
Team Engagement and Business Growth

The shift towards environmental accountability has been warmly embraced by the Green Divers team. Instructors and Divemasters actively share conservation messages, propose eco-friendly operational improvements, and take pride in upholding high environmental standards.
“Our team has embraced the Green Fins philosophy wholeheartedly. Sustainability has become part of our daily culture rather than an additional task. The Green Fins programme has encouraged valuable discussions within our team and inspired everyone to become more proactive in identifying ways we can further reduce our environmental footprint.”
“Being a Green Fins Digital Member represents accountability, continuous improvement, and leadership. It demonstrates our commitment to following internationally recognized best practices while reminding us that sustainability is an ongoing journey rather than a final destination. For our team, it means making thoughtful decisions every day, whether that involves educating divers, reducing waste, or protecting marine habitats. It reinforces that every small action contributes to the bigger picture of ocean conservation.”
This clear conservation focus has also proven to be a compelling business advantage.
“More divers than ever want to support operators whose values match their own,” says Kiera. “Our commitment attracts incredible guests who appreciate our educational approach. It has led to fantastic reviews, strong word-of-mouth recommendations, and a community of like-minded divers on our boat. It’s so nice having people with common interests onboard and hearing that they appreciate our conservation focus and educational approach has been really awesome”
For operators considering Green Fins, Kiera emphasizes that membership offers far more than a badge on a website: “Green Fins is more than just a step in the PADI Eco Center application process. It is the most beautiful community of divers who share common goals and beliefs regarding conservation and are eager to share their knowledge with you! The community forum has helped us solve problems, implement new initiatives and provide a sounding board for new ideas. The group is truly inspiring and it’s been so interesting to see how other dive centers have overcome struggles or implemented changes locally.“

Looking Ahead: The Ocean Access Program
Green Divers Barbados is currently developing an Ocean Access Program – a scholarship initiative aimed at breaking down financial barriers for local youth.
“Seeing is believing,” explains Kiera. “If local children can’t see what’s underwater, it’s hard for them to value or protect it. We want to inspire the next generation of ocean advocates and open doors to careers in marine science and diving.”
Students will earn program places by organising local beach clean-ups or taking part in citizen-science projects. Funding will guide participants through three developmental phases:
- Swimming Lessons: Building foundational water confidence.
- Scuba Certifications: Opening the door to professional dive training.
- Marine Biology & Survey Internships: Providing hands-on scientific experience.
Green Divers Barbados demonstrates that when sustainability is built into a business from day one, conservation and boutique dive operations go hand in hand. By combining rigorous environmental standards, free diver education, and community-driven youth initiatives, Kiera Bloom and her team are proving that small operations can make a lasting impact on marine conservation.
