The Republic of the Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean consisting of a double chain of twenty-six atolls. The waters of the Maldives are known for their variety of coral reefs, abundance of fish and healthy populations of large marine vertebrates such as whale sharks and manta rays. Unsurprisingly this reputation has led to a thriving diving industry with tourism being the country's main source of income.
The Government department who coordinate and facitlitate Green Fins activities as the National Management Team are the Environmental Protection Agency, a legal regulatory entity working under the supervision of a governing body of the Ministry of Environment and Energy. They are perfectly suited to support the approach and use Green Fins as one of their projects to help protect the marine resources that the Maldives so heavily depend on as a country. It is also a great tool for them to work alongside the private sector and recieve feedback on issues that concern them.
The National Management Team have already received a positive response from the private sector and are looking forward to working alongside them and other stakeholders to support the implementation of this exciting new project. You can see more on our News section and Facebook
Green Fins is also supported by the IUCN who thorugh their Maldives office and under the Mangroves for the Future inititiave have helped to implement and develop Green Fins Maldives. You can read more on this and see how you can get involved with Citizen Science with their Maldives Conservation Portal developed by IUCN Maldives.
